After meeting their team mentor and completing an interactive numeracy quiz, pupils select players ready to compete in the weekly fantasy football league. They also think creatively as a team, to invent some disasters for Bob, the Pompey grounds-man!
Pupils kick off with their first visit to Fratton Park, sitting at the highest point in the Fratton End. Back at the Study Centre, they then learn some mathemagic tricks, which they teach to the rest of the group!
After visiting the press area at Fratton Park, pupils construct a ‘phone-a-friend’ play script, persuading Pompey’s manager to put them in the team, ready for a clash against Man United!
Pupils have the chance to interview Roger McFarlane, a PFC security steward. They are also given the task of writing a letter of application to work as his assistant!
The session begins with an exciting visit to the tunnel and dug-out at Fratton Park. Then pupils complete a pitch-side challenge, working out the area and perimeter of different pitches. After being given a ‘secret character’, pupils write their own Kenning poem, which they present on Publisher.
A visit to the Pompey megastore is used to practise numeracy skills and pupils use Publisher to create a poster, advertising a product from the shop.
Following a behind-the-scenes visit to the changing rooms at Fratton Park, pupils work in pairs to write a recipe for the perfect match. They also complete a numeracy task entitled ‘Away Match Maths’.
Pupils begin creating a DVD of their Study Centre experience. Using Apple Mac’s i-Movie, pupils learn how to insert clips, titles and special effects. They also work as a team to win the football reading quiz!
Pupils continue to edit their DVDs, adding transitions and music to create a professional finish. They also have another go at the interactive numeracy quiz, to see if they can improve their scores!
Using Apple Mac’s ‘Comic Life’ software, pupils use photographs of their stadium visits to create a comic strip entitled ‘My debut for Pompey’. A great end to a fantastic ten weeks!
